چکیده

Complexity analysis provides a measure of how well the computations being performed by a cognitive model are supported by the constraints of biological computing. We argue that research in computational cognitive science will be greatly aided by treating computational complexity as a primary issue on the same order of importance as significance analysis in experimental work. In this paper, we give a brief review of computational complexity and its application in computer science. We then show how it can be applied to incorporate biological constraints abstractly into computational cognitive science research, even in the presence of massive uncertainty about the underlying neuroscience. To ground this discussion of complexity, examples are drawn from two recent pieces of work: Xu and Tenenbaum’s work applying Bayesian inference to word learning (Xu & Tenenbaum, 2007) and Forbus and Hinrich’s work on the construction of a large-scale analogical reasoner (K. D. Forbus & Hinrichs, 2006).

Enhancing Methodological Rigor for Computational Cognitive Science: Core Tenets and Ad Hoc Residuals

Computational models are notoriously difficult to compare and interpret, resulting in a community segmented around modeling paradigms. In this paper, we seek to develop community standards and methodology that will make it easier to compare work across computational paradigms, discern what types of empirical predictions can be drawn from computational work, and test the validity of computationa...

Evaluating Goodness-of-Fit in Comparison of Models to Data

While the representational theory of mind is without doubt one of the central theoretical underpinnings of Cognitive Science, the use of cognitive simulation models to explain human behavior is one of its main methodological tools. Not only does cognitive modeling exemplify a view of human thinking as symbol processing, it also provides us with rigorous qualitative and quantitative predictions ...

The future of fMRI in cognitive neuroscience

Over the last 20 years, fMRI has revolutionized cognitive neuroscience. Here I outline a vision for what the next 20 years of fMRI in cognitive neuroscience might look like. Some developments that I hope for include increased methodological rigor, an increasing focus on connectivity and pattern analysis as opposed to "blobology", a greater focus on selective inference powered by open databases,...

Computational complexity analysis for cognitive scientists

Many computationalor rational-level models of cognition postulate computations that appear to be computationally intractable (e.g., NP-hard or worse). Formally, this means that the postulated computations consume an exponential amount of time. Informally, this means that the postulated computations do not scale in any obvious way to explain how the modeled cognitive capacities can operate in th...

Evolutionary Theory in Cognitive Neuroscience: A 20-Year Quantitative Review of Publication Trends

Evolutionary cognitive neuroscience is an emerging and promising new scientific field that combines the meta-theoretical strengths of an evolutionary perspective with the methodological rigor of neuroscience. The purpose of the present research was to quantify and test evolution’s influence in neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience journals over time (1987-2006). In Study 1, analyses from a co...
